GO GREEN: IT'S THE COLOR OF PHILADELPHIA'S FUTURE

In 2003, the Philadelphia Eagles launched "Go Green," a ground-breaking campaign to better the environment. The Eagles are the first professional sports organization to implement an environmental strategy, instituting recycling programs, the procurement of post-consumer recycled paper products, the purchase of renewable energy from wind and other sources, tree-planting programs, the use of organic and pesticide-free materials on our playing and practice fields, and soon, even bio-diesel fuel recycled from the cooking fats used in the team's kitchens.

Go Green has dramatically reduced the organization's environmental footprint and impact on global warming by eliminating thousands of metric tons of greenhouse gases and other pollutants from being released into the earth's atmosphere and saving hundreds of thousands of trees, producing the equivalent of eliminating more than seven million miles of automobile travel or planting 450,500 trees.

Recycling, using renewable energy resources, neutralizing carbon output, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and tree planting are all central to the Eagles effort. "Go Green" is more than just a play on words for the Eagles. "Go Green!" has become both a rallying cry for the football team and a good citizenship message for the community. If every NFL team followed a similar model, and subsequently all sports and stadium businesses, the impact would be dramatic. At the NFL Business Summit to be held April 11-13 in Philadelphia, the Eagles plan to hold educational sessions and round tables about Go Green to encourage all NFL teams to follow suit.

Go Green has produced a shift towards greener procurement practices; clean energy purchasing from wind and methane gas sources; printing of team publications on forest friendly, post-consumer recycled paper; partnerships with Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and other Philadelphia area environmental and community groups; active and comprehensive recycling at Lincoln Financial Field, the team's training facilities at the NovaCare Center, and corporate offices.

Via the GO GREEN effort, the Philadelphia Eagles:

  • Now purchase 25% of its electricity from green energy sources, including wind and reclaimed methane gas from landfills.
  • Soon, will add power from the sun to its energy mix via a photovoltaic solar installation at the team's training facility and corporate offices.
  • Use post-consumer chlorine-free recycled paper for all the organization's paper applications and team publications;
  • Employ the use of post-consumer, recycled materials in food service and concession areas at its stadium, training facilities, and corporate offices.
  • Utilize healthy, non-polluting cleaning and maintenance supplies and organic-based products for the team's facilities including the practice and playing fields;
  • Plant trees to offset carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases produced by many of the team's football and corporate operations;
  • Regularly audit and monitor energy use and carbon dioxide output to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Soon, will be recycling cooking fat from its kitchens and concession areas and converting it to bio-diesel: an alternative low-pollution fuel to operate the team's diesel-engine vehicles.

GO GREEN PRODUCES MEASURABLE RESULTS

  • Through Purchasing 300 kwh of wind energy produced equivalent of not releasing 3,950 pounds of Carbon Dioxide; 27 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide; 8 pounds of Nitrogen Oxide. The CO2 reductions are equivalent to: 3,426 miles not driven or 268 trees planted;
  • Through recycling programs and the purchase of post-consumer recycled materials, saved 139 metric tons of greenhouse gas from release into the Earth's atmosphere;
  • Through green energy purchases, saved more than 6.4 million pounds of greenhouse gases and other pollutants - equal to eliminating 7.1 million miles of automobile travel or planting 450,000 trees;
  • Eliminated 5.6 billion BTU's of energy, reducing impact on the planet's climate;
  • Recycled nearly 150 tons of paper, cardboard, and beverage containers;
  • Saved more than 214 tons of wood from virgin forests by recycling and buying recycled paper;
  • By the end of 2006. through Go Green commitments, the Eagles saved an additional 6.4 million pounds of pollutants - the equivalent 7.1 million miles of automobile travel or planting 450.000 trees.

Examples of annual numbers for various Eagles' paper uses include:

  • Eagles Digest - totals 20.5 tons (100% recycled, 50% post-consumer recycyled)
  • Season Review - totals 5.5 tons (100% post-consumer recycled)
  • Game Day Magazine - totals 41.25 tons (10% recycled content)
  • Eagles Yearbook - totals 20 tons (20% recycled content)
  • Eagles Media Guide - totals 9.9 tons (10% recycled content)
  • Office paper - totals 3.44 tons (100% post-consumer recycled paper)

GO GREEN RECENT AND UPCOMING EFFORTS

The Philadelphia Eagles committed $125,000 to the Tree Vitalize partnership, managed by Fairmount Park, to plant 300 trees at 15 elementary schools and 5 park sites.

The Philadelphia Eagles have partnered with Philadelphia's Historic District by helping to green the newly renovated Franklin Square. Philadelphia residents will benefit from this reclaimed green space and the Eagles will contribute to new plantings of shrubs, and large and small trees throughout Franklin Square, located at 6th and Race Streets.

The Philadelphia Eagles recognize that generating electricity is one of the leading contributors to climate change and global warming. An upcoming goal is that all Eagles employees in the PECO service area sign up for PECO Wind Energy to expand Go Green's environmental impact and include the individual support of employees. The Eagles will reimburse employees for the cost so there will be no out-of-pocket cost to employees. The Eagles are the first organization to offer a reimbursement program of this kind.

The Philadelphia Eagles are proud corporate citizens of the City of Philadelphia and looks forward to continuing to expand Go Green and offer its successes as examples of best practices in the business community.

"Go Green has become not only our rallying cry, but also a part of the Philadelphia Eagles mission: to create and sustain championship performance on the field and in the community through programs that promote the quality of life in our region, green the environment to improve our impact on the planet, and enhance our profitability as a business.
